Prescriptions, dental care and supplementary insurance

A health card does not pay every health expense. Understanding coverage gaps helps families budget for prescriptions, dentistry and other services before a bill arrives.

For

Workers reviewing employer benefits and families planning health expenses beyond public coverage.

Separate the layers of coverage

Distinguish basic public coverage, targeted assistance programs, and supplementary insurance or self-payment. A prescription outside basic medical coverage might qualify under a separate drug plan. Dental assistance also has its own eligibility. List recurring needs person by person, then establish which arrangement pays each expense rather than choosing a policy by name or premium alone.

Understand pharmacy prescriptions

Ask the prescriber or pharmacist about active ingredients, instructions and follow-up. Bring existing medication details from Vietnam rather than assuming brand names match. Pharmacies can check formulary and authorization rules, and bills may include dispensing charges. Discuss affordability with a professional instead of changing doses or stopping medication on your own.

Provincial drug programs differ

British Columbia’s PharmaCare, Ontario’s drug programs and Manitoba Pharmacare use different eligibility and payment rules. Income, age, circumstances and other coverage can matter. A prescription is not automatically covered. Confirm the program, the particular medicine, required deductible or copayment and effective dates separately from ordinary health-card registration.

Review employer benefits

Request the actual benefit booklet. Check start dates, waiting periods, employee contributions and dependant registration. Reimbursement rates, annual limits and exclusions differ by service. Ask about coordinating two plans and what happens after employment ends. An advertised benefits package does not prove the entire family has been enrolled.

Plan dental care and payment

For planned dentistry, request an assessment and written estimate, checking any insurer preauthorization. The Canadian Dental Care Plan considers access to dental insurance, family income, tax residence and filed returns. Eligibility does not make every service free: copayments and differences may remain. Confirm current program and provider billing arrangements before committing to expensive treatment.

Choose supplementary insurance deliberately

Start with likely needs such as recurring medication, dentistry, glasses or physiotherapy. Review pre-existing conditions, exclusions, service limits and deductibles. A large advertised maximum may contain restrictive sublimits. Confirm practitioner and referral requirements, comparing annual premiums with expected reimbursement and protection against larger expenses.

Keep records and verify before service

Before major spending, retain the service description, estimate and coverage confirmation. Direct billing does not remove responsibility for rejected amounts. Keep receipts and claims decisions, meeting submission deadlines. Ask about review procedures for unexpected results and reassess all coverage after job, family or provincial changes.

Practical next steps

  • List likely prescription, dental and supplementary needs.
  • Check public, targeted-program and employer coverage separately.
  • Review limits, waiting periods, deductibles and dependant rules.
  • Obtain estimates and coverage checks before planned care.
  • Retain receipts, track claims and update changing circumstances.
